Fresh out of high school Billy McSwain passed on college, partly due to his family’s challenging financial situation, and decided to take up a job at a local distributor for Anheuser Busch beer.
He slowly climbed the corporate ladder, starting on the bottom rung and working his way up as an Area Sales Director with over 25 employees under his purview.
“I thought I had it all,” he says. “I was making about $50,000 at a stable job with a reputation of getting things done.” But after decades of working for the company he loved he was fired. “It was the worst day of my life,” remembers Billy. “They took me into this big board room, and told me that I didn’t have a job there anymore, and then said a bunch of other stuff I didn’t even hear. Before I knew it, I was escorted to my desk and given a box.”
Once home Billy explained to his daughters that no matter what, he would do whatever was necessary to keep their little family afloat. He was 50 years old, with no formal education and only one company on his resume. Even Billy knew the implications of that situation.
“I was terrified,” he explains, thinking back to that dark day. “My daughters were my world, and I couldn’t provide for them anymore. I didn’t know what to do.” Luckily, Billy had been introduced to Vemma just a short time before losing his job — an introduction that initially held very little interest for him, although he did enjoy the products.
Looking back, Billy almost has to laugh. “Little did I know getting fired was the best thing that could have ever happened to me. Within a year, I made enough money to equal my old salary. And then I doubled it. Then tripled it. And this year, I’ll make eight times what I made just eight years ago. And I can tell you right now, I’m not scared of getting fired again, because I’m my own boss.”*
Interestingly, Billy still speaks with fondness about his former years filled with visits to local gas stations and convenience stores, setting up Budweiser displays and handing out coupons. But now, instead of selling beer, his focus is on vitamins — and more importantly, the opportunity to change people’s lives.
